SHIP MAIL FROM ST.THOMAS - CHRISTIANSTED - FREDERIKSTED AND ST.THOMAS - FREDERIKSTED - CHRISTIANSTED

Mourning cover canceled Christiansted February 28. The cover is a rare use of commercial nature and was sent during the time when the St. Croix Post Offices had depleted their stock of 1 cent stamps. There are only two known morning covers with a bisected stamp. Note “via Bassin” - the letter is sent from St.Thomas via mailbox and therefore not cancelled in St. Thomas. Cancelled upon arrival in Bassin (Christiansted).

Please refer to the page Christiansted - Frederiksted to see the other known mourning cover.

This letter was sent March 30 from St. Thomas with the schooner "Vigilant" - to Christiansted. There - a transit postmark Christiansted April 1 was added on the back - before it continued by mule cart to Frederiksted. Here a second arrival cancel was struck. These postmarks clearly define the DWI post office routing. Note - "Agent R.M.S P C" - the Royal Mail Steam Packet Company.
Also note the inverted frame.

St.Thomas February 10 sent to Bassin (Christiansted) via ship to Frederiksted - continued by mule cart to Christiansted.

Backstamped February 12 - first stamped Frederiksted and then Christiansted.
